Re: Hope and the Fraser Canyon Electoral District

As former two term serving Electoral Area B Director and resident in Sunshine Valley since 1998, I will share my observations of the impact the 2008 redistribution.

We are predominantly a resource based economy not agricultural with growth challenges. With the current downturn in forestry we have more local business closing and families leaving. We struggle to keep hospitals, schools and government offices open, in essence we are in survival mode.

Our rural communities have little in common with Chilliwack who is quickly urbanizing. Competing needs at the regional district board hosts a majority of votes on policies and projects which have little or no benefit to the smaller communities of Boston Bar, Boothroyd, Dogwood Valley Hope, Othello, Spuzzum, Sunshine Valley and Yale. Our communities’ needs are focused on livability.

In the former Yale-Lillooet riding, our needs and regional discussions reflected the resource based economy, job creation and access to public services. Our communities share similar challenges. It is time to consider returning Hope and the Fraser Canyon into a Fraser- Nicola riding type riding.
