I live in Hope. I would like to add my voice with those individuals asking that Hope and the Fraser Canyon be taken out of Chilliwack- Hope and rejoined with Fraser-Nicola.

Over the last few decades I have seen quite a few changes take place in the area. One of the worst decisions ever made was when we were taken out of Yale-Lillooet and added to Chilliwack. Now our problems and opinions are constantly and consistently ignored and over-shadowed by those of Chilliwack with its own set of problems. I hate it that my community is constantly being short-changed over and again.

The changes that were made in 2008 were as a result of a submission made by the mayor and council of the District of Hope. The people of Hope and area were never consulted by the District. I see that the out-going Mayor of Hope, Susan Johnson, has put in a submission stating that Hope and the Fraser Canyon should stay in with Chilliwack. Ms. Johnson has never represented my views or the views of the vast majority of people who live in Hope and its neighbouring Aboriginal communities. I believe she is only expressing her own misguided views, which she continually has done, this, along with questions of actual residency, are why she did not stand for re-election.

For the second time in just 6 years, the mayor and council of the District of Hope have held no public meetings, no calls for expression of opinions, no placement of ads in the local newspaper, and definitely no consultation with the people they purport to represent on what we think about the redistribution of provincial boundaries. This is not how it is supposed to work in an actual democracy.

The opinions of the current out-going Mayor of Hope are based on her own personal, partisan views, just as they were for the past Mayor in 2008. I totally disagree with Ms. Johnson. Hope and the Fraser Canyon should never have been separated from Fraser-Nicola, or Yale-Lillooet as it was called. We have much more in common with our eastern and northern small-town neighbours than we do with Chilliwack. Others have talked about those important links, such as history, geography, transportation, the economy, etc.

I respectfully ask the Commission to put Hope and the Fraser Canyon back with Fraser-Nicola. Thank you.
