The current boundaries of the Stikine electoral district should not be changed. While ridings in the southern half of the province have greater population served by one member of the legislature, residents of Stikine already have far less access to their representative than their southern peers.

Stikine has many factors that impact the ability of constituents to receive "effective representation" despite small population per MLA compared to other constituencies.

Stikine is already the largest constituency in the province.

It already takes more than 20 hours non-stop driving to transit the constituency from Hungry Hill to Atlin, weather permitting.

Almost no public transportation exists for constituents to travel to MLA offices in Hazelton or Smithers for an appointment.

Many constituents do not have a drivers license or own a vehicle -- some of the worst socioeconomic indicators in BC are found in Stikine so accessing their MLA's office is even more challenging.

Most of Stikine lacks cell phone service and many areas do not have high speed internet service so electronic access to our MLA is also a challenge.

At least Stikine now consolidates all Gitxsan communities within one constituency.

Stikine now makes all communities along Hwy 37 part of the same constituency.

Stikine now has boundaries that make cultural, economical and environmental sense. Adding communities further east would not fit relationships already in place based on culture, economics and environment.

For all these reasons related to "effective representation" I do not want to see more territory added to Stikine or Stikine absorbed into another constituency.

Please recognize that special circumstances exist in Northern BC. Effective representation cannot be based simply on population.
